A few nails, paint, and a drill can convert unused square footage into your new favorite corner. If you decide to remove the closet door to fit a chair into the setup, you might be looking for something to differentiate your cloffice from the rest of your space. Not only is it useful, but it’s a great example of a doors-off cloffice that adds attractiveness to the entire room. If your closet is really narrow, it could be difficult to fit a full-size desk in it. Rather than have an ill-fitting desk, install a series of strategically placed shelves. This particular setup leaves plenty of room for storage, and a single shelf at hip height makes for the perfect computer desk and work space.

This is a great example of how you can use a closet for both purposes. The custom built-in divider creates a desk on one side of the closet, while the other half has several storage cubbies and a space to hang clothing. It serves double duty and looks great while doing it. Not only does this seemingly normal closet open up to reveal an office, but it also hides a bold pop of color in an otherwise neutral room. Depending on what type of work you do in your home office and how you do it, you may not even want or need a chair. But this is where choosing the right closet is a big issue—particularly in old houses where the placement of the closets may defy modern logic. Try to choose a centrally-located closet so you can work there conveniently and perhaps set a chair or stool in front of it.

If you’re still keen to lay a different floor over your cloffice, do not use busy patterns as they will overwhelm a small space. As long as you have several sources of light, you can turn off the ones you don’t need at the moment and create an ideal ambience in your home office. Having no doors makes a small space office appear larger; the downside is lack of privacy.

Another option is a breakfast nook you don’t use. Finished attics also make surprisingly good office spaces if they have a window or skylight and cooling and heating. You won’t be bothered by noise, and you can leave work behind at the end of the day. And face it, the gossip in the home office is subpar. I mean, I’d prefer a window in my workplace too, but even people who work office jobs don’t always get that and a lot of people cope just fine without.
