Weekly AmeriCorps Reflections
I want my students to use this holiday time to finalize their Issues, and come back in January with 5 resource organizations, 3 mentors, and 2 volunteers. Anybody who does, will be eligible for a pizza certificate!
Weekly Reflections – Week 12 – from Tyler Poulakos
Poulakos Week 12 Blog Post What are my successes and frustration with connecting with community resources? I think the hardest part of community resources is simply finding the resources available. We have been working with the students to identify the current resources in their community. We have a neonatal/teen pregnancy group at Choffin that is exploring the community resources for teen moms. They are so surprised by the available resources we have In Youngstown and want to explore this in their project. They are compiling resources to report on that help teen mothers. Sometimes, there are so many resources that it’s difficult to choose which to use. Take human trafficking for example. There is a bunch of resources that are available but determining with is the best is hard. We are working with the students to figure out which are the best to use. Alliance is doing a great job finding resource! It’s shocking the information and support they find. I think mostly it’s the immense support they get from the teachers. This site is definitely an extremely impressive site and there capabilities are amazing. With Warren, we did a needs assessments last week in order to identify problems and resources in Warren. I think everything is going good with the resources and the students are doing a good job finding them.
Weekly Reflections – Week 12 – from Ramini
Tell us about your successes (or frustrations) in connecting with community resources. How might your fellow AmeriCorps members or HPAC staff help? Coincidentally, one of HPAC’s connections is someone my students are trying to reach out to. Amaha, the leader of the Gem City Dayton grocery store project, is someone I think will be an excellent person to ask about west Dayton’s food desert, and I am encouraging my students to reach out to him. I think he will be more likely to be receptive since he is already familiar with the program. At this point, I don’t think we need to much help, but I anticipate that I’ll need guidance soon enough!
Weekly Reflections – Week 12 – from Emily Smith
For Marietta College, connecting with Relay for life and bringing them to campus has been awesome. Though it is a massive project to tackle, our students are extremely excited for the project. At Warren Local high school, the students are also have success with reaching out to their community resources. They are extremely connected with their foster children organization. Some help from fellow AmeriCorps members may include if they have any more awesome connections regarding cancer awareness or foster children for our students to contact.
Weekly Reflections – Week 12 from Whitaker
Tell us about your successes (or frustrations) in connecting with community resources. How might your fellow AmeriCorps members or HPAC staff help? I felt the training that I received didn’t really get me prepared for what I was to be doing. Honestly this job is something that you need someone to show you the ropes first. But now that I have started in my schools, I can say that I am loving it. The kids are awesome and I am so pumped for what that we are doing. I think that the members and staff are helping in all the ways they can and I truly appreciate what Amanda and Matt have done to help me at the schools that we are at.
