The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity at The Ohio State University is proud to announce the nation’s first free and publicly available online implicit bias module series tailored specifically toward K–12 educators.
At the Kirwan Institute, we are committed to the creation of a just and inclusive society where all people and communities have the opportunity to succeed. Our commitment to this mission is why we work so hard to understand and overcome barriers that prevent access to opportunity in our society, such as implicit bias and racial disparities in our education system.
Kirwan believes in the importance of education and training on key topics like implicit bias, historic inequities in the education system, and education policy as a comprehensive approach to addressing disparities in K-12 education outcomes. However, many school districts have limited ability to equip teachers and staff with resources and training related to implicit bias due to cost, time requirement, and difficulty accessing materials and resources in a flexible manner.
Developed in partnership with the Schott Foundation for Public Education and The Ohio State University, Kirwan will provide this educational opportunity at no cost as a way to further our mission around equitable access, education, and inclusion. These modules include a series of videos, activities, and resources that can be accessed by districts, school buildings, and interested individuals. Given the busy schedules and demands facing K-12 educators, we also designed these modules so that participants can work at their own pace.
We are excited that this free online implicit bias training will provide participants with a quality foundational understanding of the research on implicit bias in K–12 education, while also equipping participants with strategies to advocate for policies to address bias and discrimination in their schools and communities.
